The Grand Prix de Monaco Historique

Every two years, Monaco plays host to this historical showcase race. In the classic car racing community, it is supposedly something of a highlight in the calendar. Classic car racing enthusiasts are treated to a spectacle of historic Grand Prix racing around the legendary Monaco circuit. More than 200 Grand Prix cars representing 50 different carmakers and 21 countries enter the event every two years.

The event consists of 7 different races, each representing the different periods of Grand Prix racing from the 1930s to the 1970s. The cars are selected for participation because of their historical value and level of originality. I can imagine it’s quite the sight to see these vintage Grand Prix cars taking to the track once again in all their glory. I’m not a traditional Formula One fan, but I can imagine that this is something that even modern-day racing fans could appreciate. It’s difficult not to care about the origins of a sport when you care about it.

Green Dial

You may recall that this is not the first green-dialed Monaco replica from TAG Heuer. In 2019, the brand released a green-dialed model with gorgeous “Cotes de Geneve” as part of the Monaco 50th Anniversary collection replica. It represented the first decade of 1969-1979. This is even more of a significant honor when you remember that Heuer first released the Monaco in 1969 as the 1133B or 1133G. The letter corresponded to the dial color, blue or grey. That said, I guess it’s surprising that the 2019 anniversary edition was green rather than blue or grey? Either way, it was a stunning dial. The green subtly changed color in the light thanks to those Geneva stripes, and the yellow highlights complemented the green wonderfully. It was, by far, the best of the five anniversary editions.

Today’s green dial is a little bit different. The rich emerald green hue takes center stage, complemented by the black sub-dials. While we have established that green is not new to the TAG Heuer Monaco replica lineup, this is a never-seen-before dial tint and adds a classy-yet-modern take on the Monaco replica. The degradé shading from light green in the center to dark green at the edge is mature and feels stylish and modern. While green is often associated as a British racing color, eagle-eyed readers may notice the connection with the famous covered portion of the Monaco Grand Prix track, preceding the chicane by the port. A white printed minute track and sundial markings and rhodium-plated indexes and hands with white Super-LumiNova offer some contrast to the dial.

39 mm Case

The 39mm case hasn’t changed in size or proportion. It’s the classic slab of watchmaking we know and love, a design that goes all the way back to the late 1960s. The Monaco replica has graced the wrists of some of the greatest names of all time, although it’s undoubtedly most well-known as the watch worn by Steve McQueen. When you take in the whole appearance of this watch, you realise that it’s a visually interesting piece. I love the number of layers this thing has. The case has a polished chamfer to it, the mostly-square bezel sits proud of it, and the square sapphire crystal protrudes significantly, just like the Plexiglass of the watches from the 60s.

Calibre Heuer 02

Inside the case is a thoroughly modern movement, the calibre Heuer 02. It’s a round movement with a 4Hz beat rate and 80-hour power reserve. To show that TAG Heuer has made an effort, it’s coloured the writing on the blackened winding rotor in green, and the column wheel which controls the chronograph is also in green. It’s a little touch, but it’s better than them simply shoving the same old movement in there.

Conclusion

The watch is water-resistant to 100 m, although I wouldn’t bet on the alligator leather strap surviving submersion too well. TAG Heuer Monaco Green Dial watch replica will be making 500 of these, each with a price tag of $6,650. Review the TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Calibre 11 39mm watch replica

The TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Calibre 11 39mm watch replica CAW211R was launched to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the brand’s relationship with Gulf Motorsports.

The TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Calibre 11 39mm watch replica CAW211R was launched to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the brand’s relationship with Gulf Motorsports. My time on the watch made me realize that it may well be my favorite Monaco. Since this Monaco Gulf watch differs only in style from the standard TAG Heuer Monaco 11 movement, I wanted to take some time to cover the evolution of the Monaco Gulf so that everyone can understand its background, evolution and history.

TAG Heuer And Gulf Oil

A certain degree of drama has always been inherent in endurance racing. It’s one of the reasons the 24 Hours of Le Mans has been adapted by Hollywood so often. After all, humans are only meant to go so fast, for so long, and the racers that test their durability to that degree are lauded for their resilience and the strength of their equipment. For this exact reason, no race team was more highly regarded in the late 1960s and early 1970s than John Wyer Automotive. Jacky Ickx, Derek Bell, Brian Redman, and Pedro Rodriguez are just a few of the legendary drivers to race under the livery (other than Siffert himself). A by-product of the success and pageantry of John Wyer Automotive, the Gulf Oil and TAG Heuer (née Heuer) branding has evolved into an intrinsic part of auto racing history. It’s a commercial relationship that helped define that period in the popular imagination, which is exactly what the TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Edition replica is meant to celebrate.

TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf ’Vintage’ replica ref. CW2118 & ref. CW211A (2005-2007)

TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf ’Vintage’ replica ref. CW2118 & ref. CW211A (2005-2007)

This Monaco Gulf celebrates the 50th anniversary between TAG and Gulf, the first Gulf Monaco came out in 2005. The TAG Heuer ‘Vintage’ Monaco reference CW2118 replica was a limited edition run of 4,000 watches with a white dial featuring red and blue stripes. These were inspired by the colors of Steve McQueen’s racing suit in Le Mans. The release in 2005 also coincided with McQueen’s 75th birthday.

Like with all Gulf Monacos replica before this latest model, the crown is on the case left alongside the chronograph pushers. It was, the only Monaco without “Gulf” on the dial (read the Calibre 11 article for details). This model has the modified-ETA calibre 17 movement housed in the smaller 38mm x 38mm, 13mm thick case. While it was a limited edition run, it’s not super difficult to find one of these on the secondary market (here are the current listings on Chrono24) ranging between around $3,500-$6,000 depending on condition, box, and papers.

The second iteration was the Gulf II Monaco replica ref. CW211A which was technically the same as its predecessor but with a new dial. Now black with orange and blue, it was an homage to McQueen’s Gulf Oil Porsche 911 in Le Mans. It also features the Gulf logo on the dial, with the ‘Monaco’ text moved to 12 o’clock. As with the CW2118 replica, this Gulf II Monaco came in a limited edition run of 4,000 units. These are harder to find than the white-dialed version, likely because the black dial just looks better. There are a few units available (current listings here) ranging between $3,500- $6,500.

TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf CAW2113 Calibre 12 replica (2009)

TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf CAW2113 Calibre 12 replica (2009)

Two years later saw the limited edition Monaco Gulf ref. CAW2113 replica with some aesthetic changes as well as a new case and new movement.

The new dial swapped out the black dial for a metallic grey with blue/orange stripes while quizzically also replacing the black date window. They replaced the matching black dial with a white date window rather than having it match the grey dial. The change from the calibre 17 to the calibre 12 wasn’t really that big of a deal. It did mark the use of a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module rather than an ETA chronograph module.

The new case size here grew by 1mm to 39mm x 39mm and 14mm thick with an exhibition caseback. Another limited edition run of 4,000 units.

The TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Edition Calibre 11 replica CAW211R

This CAW211R borrows the successful form factor of the Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 CAW211P replica from 2015, the most authentic revival of the original 1133B (the very first Monaco; B for blue), and subverts its classical detailing with the graphic Gulf design. It’s a decision that transforms the watch’s appeal and embraces the excess of the Monaco’s earliest look.

CAW211R

This watch has an appearance nearly identical to the original Tag Heuer Monaco replica, a watch defined by its slab-sided case profile, sharp angles, raised crystal, tiered pushers, horizontal hour markers, and date aperture at six o’clock. The biggest difference in function between the original Monaco and the CAW211R is the movement inside. There’s a sapphire crystal on the caseback that allows a view of the movement and the decoration that TAG Heuer has applied, namely côtes de Genève on the branded rotor and perlage visible underneath it. Overall, the case features a satin finish with polished bevels.

The dial features the emblematic colors of the Gulf Oil livery, solid petroleum blue on the left side and light blue and orange stripes cascading down the entire right side of the dial. The distinctive Gulf color palette at use is vibrant and full of life, just like the high-speed cars that wore it. The dial includes a small Gulf Oil logo positioned above the date window at six o’clock. It also features the original Heuer shield logo compared to the modern TAG Heuer branding, a decision that reflects the unique heritage this watch is meant to honor. Finally, the red lacquered central chronograph seconds hand matches the red five-minute markers and the tips of the central hour and minute hand.

CAW211R

On the wrist, the Monaco wears unlike any other watch out there. Its 39mm by 39mm cushion shape and stubby lugs create an interesting dynamic on the wrist. With its tall sapphire crystal and three-part case construction, the watch has a unique and definite presence, one that is surprisingly easy to get used to when worn. The strap, which tapers substantially, helps quite a bit in this regard, thanks to its easy-to-adjust, Heuer-branded deployant buckle. The perforated design of the strap, made of blue calfskin leather, is another distinct aesthetic choice that works well with its contrast orange stitching.

Review the First Gold Monaco – TAG Heuer Monaco 18ct Yellow Gold Chronograph Replica

Everyone knows that a sports watch should be made of steel. It’s not just a matter of aesthetics, but also practicality-stainless steel is harder than most precious metals, including 18-karat gold, which means your steel sports watch is less likely to be scratched and damaged than the equivalent gold. But there’s something special about the TAG Heuer Monaco 18ct Gold chronograph replica CW5140, the Monaco case is perhaps the sportiest of TAG Heuer’s classic chronographs, and its large, square case, already conspicuous, is made even more so by the square case made of gold.

The Story

While there were Gold Carreras and an Autavia in Heuer’s historic catalogue, there was never a Gold Monaco. It wasn’t until 2002, some 5 years after TAG Heuer revived the Monaco that the first Gold Monaco replica was launched. The watch featured in the 2002 and 2003 catalogues, before being replaced in 2004 by the Monza Calibre 36 Rose Gold.

If we turn to the 2002 Price List, we can see that the Monaco was priced at £6500 in the UK, and in fact was one of the less expensive gold models, given that others such as the 2000 and 6000 series also featured a gold bracelet. So why this interest in Gold?

When Jean-Christophe Babin arrived as the new TAG Heuer CEO in 2001, part of his mission was to elevate the brand in the eyes of consumers. He was determined to bring back TAG Heuer’s reputation for innovation and precision, projects that began to emerge in 2005 with the launch of the Calibre 360 movement. But projects like the Calibre 360 take time and know-how, and when it came to making movements, TAG Heuer had no in-house knowledge of mechanical movements, having relied on Lemania and ETA/ Valjoux since the 1980s. So how could the brand be pushed up-market ahead of the technical cavalry arriving? The answer was precious metals.

From 2001, TAG Heuer released Gold versions of many of the main model lines- 2000, 6000, Alter Ego, Monaco, Monza, Carrera and Autavia. The Monaco Gold collection replica consisted of a single Calibre 17 reference (CW5140) replica, although there was also a limited run of around 15 watches of a White Gold Monaco, reference CW5141.

Design

The TAG Heuer Monaco 18K Gold replica (18K being 75% pure Gold and 25% alloys such as zinc or copper) used the same basic design as the standard steel Monaco of the day, reference CW2111, but with a few key differences in detailing to set the flagship Monaco apart from its steel brethren.

The dial

The dial is quite different to that offered on the steel Monaco of the day, and is a wonderful star-burst silver colour. The hands and applied hour-markers are Gold, giving the watch a luxurious rather than sporty look. And speaking of those hour markers, they are significantly longer than those used on the steel Monaco.

The watch uses a TAG Heuer rather than Heuer logo- it’s often forgotten that LVMH phased out the use of the Heuer logo from around 2002, only reprising it again in 2010 with the 300 SLR. All Monaco/ Carrera/ Monza/ Autavia from this era are branded as TAG Heuers.

The Case

Well, ref CW5140 replica is a solid 18ct yellow gold cased (38 mm x 38 mm x 13 mm) Monaco chronograph with “cushion” angled pushers. The dial is 18 ct silvered gold and has 3 sub registers at 3,6, and 9 (but not picked out in another colour), plus a date window at 6. It has baton type hands and gold indexes. The hands are lumed, as are the tips of the indexes. All is covered by a quite pronounced Plexiglass crystal.

Caseback

The piece is powered by the automatic calibre 17 (which is an ETA 2894-2 movement with a chronograph module) which beats at 28,800 vph (4hz) and has 37 rubies. The power reserve is some 42 hours and water resistance is to 30 m. This movement is COSC chronometer rated. A large gold rotor dominates the movement, and has some nice Cotes de Geneve decoration.

The case back is solid (pity) and notes usual brand information – along with reference and serial numbers, plus 18 ct gold hallmark.

Review the TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph 39mm Forged Carbon Bamford Edition Replica

Created with a solid carbon case, an elegant full black dial and aqua blue chronograph counters. Tag heuer’s most iconic timepiece has been reinvented in collaboration with Bamford Watch Department. Presenting the Tag Heuer Monaco Bamford Edition 39mm watch replica. Here’s a hands-on look at this, ehm, striking looking watch.

Solid Carbon Case

The square, albeit pre-Instagram-generation Monaco case, I think, looks fantastic in forged carbon. Its defined shape and sharp corners make for large, continuous surfaces where the random texture of its material can really be admired. Something to bear in mind, and I have tried to make the live images reflect this as much as possible, is that the material has a glossy, but not overly-shiny look to it in which the darker and brighter areas interchange in a more dull, less defined way when compared to regular carbon fiber. The transitions are smooth as forged carbon has a semi-glossy, semi-matte, murky look.

The 39mm wide case wears much larger than that figure would suggest and in that, this Tag Heuer Monaco Bamford watch replica is like any other Monaco. The arrangement of the left-hand crown and right-hand pushers is in line with the traditional Monaco, while their black PVD steel choice of material is not. The forged carbon case acts like the forged carbon we have seen elsewhere.

Black Dial

Bamford’s signature style is evident in the Tag Heuer Monaco Bamford Forged Carbon chronograph fake counters highlighted with luminous marks on the indices and the date window, which are a magnificent aqua blue – Bamford Watch Department’s favourite shade of blue. This detail gives the timepiece a resolutely modern look which is right on-trend.

The arrangement of the horizontal indices is also close to the famed old Monaco; in sharp contrast with them stands the vibrant blue prints everywhere else on the dial and hands. The upside to this is that legibility really is quite good – there is plenty of contrast between the background and the hands and their respective tracks – while the downside is that the rather ostentatious text above the date really jumps out at you. The dial and the case-back are engraved with “Monaco Bamford” as a reminder of the partners in this collaboration. The whole piece is set off perfectly with an exquisite black alligator leather strap.

Calibre 11

Around the wrist, as I said, the chunky Monaco case wears more like a 42, perhaps even 43mm case as it takes up considerable real estate, while the thickness of the case – courtesy of the Calibre 11 movement and the box crystal – further adds to the perceived heft; even if this TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph Forged Carbon watch replica isn’t heavy at all. Speaking of the movement, the Calibre 11 is a base Sellita SW-300 with a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module on top. Frequency is a modern 4Hz while power reserve is a low 40 hours and water resistance to 100 meters.

Conclusion

While the design and tech specs are all well and good, just 500 were made and this new TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph replica in forged carbon is a most welcome addition to the Monaco family that was, in all fairness, getting a bit self-absorbed with all the vintage stuff. Price for the TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph Forged Carbon Bamford Edition replica will be $8,100, but $139 on our TAG Heuer watch replica store, buy it now.
